Learning the Basics of Proper Grill Care

Delicious food prepared on a grill is perfect for many occasions. Proper care of your grill ensures you get consistent flavor from the foods you serve to family and friends. Protect the investment you make in your grill by following these easy and effective grill care tips that save you time and money in the long run.

Think of your grill as your outdoor oven. You do not leave messes in or on your oven, and you should not do so with your grill. A clean grill means better-tasting food and a better-functioning grill. This means taking the time to clean the grates on the grill after each use. There are a variety of products that make this process easier. Just make sure they are designed for use with your type of grill.

For charcoal grills, dispose of the coals after they cool, and wipe out the inside of the grill with a damp cloth. Use a grill cleaner if you prefer. Some gas grills have a "clean" setting, but this does not completely clean the grates and grill itself. Wipe down the inside after you run a "clean" cycle.

When preparing to cook foods on the grill, rub a small amount of oil or fat on the grates to prevent the food from sticking. If food does stick to the grill, get it off the grates after the grill cools to avoid attracting insects. Consider an investment in a grill cover, particularly if the grill is directly exposed to the elements. This reduces the threat of water and rust damage to the grill.

Perform steps such as cleaning the grates every time you use your grill. If you use your grill extensively, clean the grill inside and out thoroughly every few weeks. This involves soaking the grates in hot, soapy water, rinsing them thoroughly and inspecting the grill for any issues. Keeping your grill in good working order takes some time, but it is worth it when you taste the results.
